Artist's Comments

The inspiration for this came from a conceptual drawing (by Joe Grant) for Disney's 'Fantasia' featuring the Sorcerer (from the 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' segment) with glowing eyes much like the ones I've given Saruman here.
There's something rather unsettling about eyes with no pupils, as you never know what they are looking at. I felt they could show a number of things. First, the fact that he has no pupils makes it hard to associate with the character. Second, it makes it seem as though Sauron has managed to use the Palantir to see through Saruman's mind.

Thanks. I don't generally try to draw scary things (at least not without adding a comical element), but I decided to here, and I think that, on this one occasion, pure, er, creepiness seems to work.
